A shovel or a trowel is a useful tool to have while camping. A folding shovel can be used to level a site for a tent, create a fire pit, shovel coals, scoop dirt onto a camp fire to put it out or dig a latrine. Some shovels also have sharpened and/or serrated edges that can be used to chop and saw brush. Some more feature packed models can have the head at 90 degrees and have a pick to dig in tough ground or break up ice.

A trowel is smaller than a shovel and is used for light digging and scooping. If you are backing, this is a good choice because it is small and light. It can be used to dig a hole, poo in the hole and cover it back up so no one steps in your mess.
